The Astra Militarum or Imperial Guard serve as the Imperium of mans main combat force. Consisting of many different regiments supported by a large amount of light and heavy armoured vehicles. The Astra militarum are allies to the Space marines in there mission to protect mankind from the dangers of the universe. The imperial guards main strength lies in their numbers. They are the largest coherent force in the galaxy. So their main route to victory is to overwhelm the enemy with their vast numbers.
The units of the imperial guard have a more traditional appearance using tanks and aircraft as there main armoured vehicles. But don't let this put you off, they still look great on the table.
